"Suspended in Waves"  2019

Artist Statement

In the 2019 gallery there is a selection of new mixed media works that explore the essence of being lifted or “buoyed” by the peaceful nature of the ocean and some of its most magnificent inhabitants.

My process for this work involves spending many hours in and near water with the intention of creating a body of work that reflects the inner peace found there.

I build up over 10 layers of paint and mixed media materials, including printmaking techniques on each wooden panel. In between each layer there are processes of scratching and sanding, adding and subtracting elements with paper, transfers, mediums, and graphite to create a rich surface. Some layers are revealed and others sink beneath the surface much like sand covering the treasures of the sea.

There is a place of great silence and peace to be found in water.

If it is true that you become that which you surround yourself with, then I endeavour to be the peace that is found in the depths of the ocean, surrounded by whale song.
